Fantastic Beasts 3, 4 and 5 release date, cast, plot and all you need to know

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald continued The Wizarding World of Harry Potter in 2018, but wasn't exactly a hit. Poor reviews and the worst box-office result of the entire series were probably not what Warner Bros was hoping for when it planned a five-movie series for Fantastic Beasts... so will we end up getting all five films?

At the moment, it seems that way, as Warner Bros is confident that it knows how to make the third movie a success, with Rowling having an "incredible vision of where she wants to go" with the whole series.

But what do we know about the future now? And how did The Crimes of Grindelwald set it up? We're glad you asked.

Fantastic Beasts 3, 4, and 5 release dates: Delays ahead?

For a while, it seemed like Fantastic Beasts 3 would follow the two-year release pattern and arrive in cinemas on November 20, 2020. This date was never set in stone, though and when production was pushed back by Warner Bros, we knew that 2020 wasn't going to happen for the threequel.

Instead Warner Bros will release the third movie on November 12, 2021, with filming due to start in spring 2020. Star Dan Fogler said the change is because they needed "more time to prep".

Warner Bros Pictures Group chairman Toby Emmerich explained the release delay in April 2019, saying: "We all believe this release date will give the filmmakers time and space to allow their artistry to truly flourish and deliver the best possible film to our fans."

The fourth and fifth movies have never had release dates, but we originally assumed we could expect them in November 2022 and November 2024. That probably won't be the case now with the third movie coming in 2021.

So, and this is just speculation for now, Fantastic Beasts 4 and 5 (if we get them) will probably arrive in November 2023 and November 2025, respectively, unless Warner Bros decides to shoot them back-to-back.

Even if they did, there's always the chance they could keep a wide gap between the sequels. After the errors of Solo: A Star Wars Story, Warner Bros is likely aware that any franchise – no matter how beloved – can suffer from fatigue. Given the lukewarm response to Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, the studio is likely being extra cautious with the third, fourth, and fifth movies in the series.

Fantastic Beasts 3, 4 and 5 cast: Scamander and company

Sadly, not everyone survived The Crimes of Grindelwald, so raise a glass to Leta Lestrange (Zoe Kravitz) who was tragically killed by Grindelwald after helping Newt and the others escape. This doesn't completely rule out us seeing Leta again in the series, but it would (probably) have to take the form of a flashback.

Also returning is, obviously, Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander. At the Toronto International Film Festival last year, Redmayne revealed that the third film is "happening, and it's really exciting".

Jude Law will reprise his role as the young Albus Dumbledore, along with Katherine Waterston as Tina Goldstein and Dan Fogler as Jacob Kowalski. Law revealed to GamesRadar he knew the title of the third film (to the surprise and jealousy of his castmates) but it may have changed since.

There's still plenty of cast who are likely to come back for the third movie though, including Alison Sudol as Queenie Goldstein and Ezra Miller as Credence Barebone (or is it Aurelius Dumbledore?).

Despite the ongoing legal battle, Johnny Depp has confirmed he will return as Gellert Grindelwald whether you want him back or not, and this has yet to change as far as the any of the films are concerned.

Also confirmed to be returning is Callum Turner as Theseus Scamander, but he has yet to see the script and has "no idea" what the sequel will be about (via Yahoo), and his story in the remaining films is yet to be confirmed.

Behind the camera, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them director David Yates (who also helmed the last four Harry Potter movies) has signed on to direct all three of the upcoming films.

In addition to Yates, another Harry Potter original series alumnus is joining the Fantastic Beasts franchise. Variety reported that Steve Kloves, who penned seven of the eight Harry Potter screenplays, was joining on for the third Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them movie. He will co-write with JK Rowling.

Fantastic Beasts 3 plot: What can we expect?

We might have to wait a while to find out exactly what the third movie will be about, but JK Rowling has potentially let slip that it'll be set in Rio de Janeiro in the 1930s after she corrected a spelling mistake on Twitter.

As of December 10, 2018, Rowling has finished the script for the third movie, so it's either a hint to Brazil-based scenes in Fantastic Beasts 3 or a clever misdirection by JK.

It'll be interesting to see if Warner Bros hedges its bets in case the threequel doesn't significantly improve on the sequel's performance. Variety reported that: "Part three is expected to put more of a spotlight on Jude Law’s young Albus Dumbledore and set more action at Hogwarts."

According to box office analyst Jeff Bock, this could be the key to success that Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald missed out on. He said (via Variety): "Just because the [third] movie is set in Brazil doesn’t mean we can’t spend half the time at Hogwarts. There are things they could do to save the movie."

Here's hoping.

As for how it will end, could it be as open-ended as The Crimes of Grindelwald, or could it potentially end in a way that could mark a satisfying finale to a trilogy? As mentioned before, we've got a while to wait to find out either way.

For everything else you need to know about the third movie, head this way.

Fantastic Beasts 3, 4 and 5 plot: Another era, another battle

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hPNqE1CX95w

As noted, JK Rowling has said that the films will cover 19 years of Wizarding World history. That will take the last one up to 1945, the year that Dumbledore defeated Grindelwald and claimed the Elder Wand from him.

That was also the year that a certain Tom Riddle (the future Voldemort) graduated from Hogwarts.

All that considered, it seems unlikely that the fifth movie won't feature the climactic battle between Dumbledore and his former friend. Credence could also turn out to play an important role in their struggle, especially if the theory that Dumbledore's sister Ariana was another Obscurial turns out to be true.

That 19-year period also covers the birth of Voldemort and the actions surrounding the creation of his first Horcruxes.

Theseus was known to be corresponding with Percival Graves, the director of magical security for the US magical government MACUSA, which put Newt's brother (whether knowingly or not) in contact with Grindelwald, who had assumed Graves's identity. That considered, his outlook might be quite different to Newt's. Could that put them on opposite sides of Grindelwald's coming war?

Fantastic Beasts 3 is released on November 12, 2021.
